DYING CITY is up and running in Rogers Park...don't miss it!

I'm writing this blog entry from the darkened box office of BoHo Theatre's Heartland Studio where our second production of DYING CITY by Christopher Shinn is running until next weekend. This evening's performance is sold out and we're incredibly excited to end this third performance weekend with a bang, especially after last night's historic win from the Chicago Cubs, who are on their way to the World Series for the first time since 1945. The city is buzzing (as is the theater), to say the least.

I'm extremely proud of this show and the people involved. Director Elizabeth Lovelady, along with Assistant Director Kate Leslie and Stage Manager Nate Dion, have done a wonderful job to bring this engaging script to life. The design team worked so well together to give us a scenic , costume, sound, and lighting design that work so cohesively together. And actors Mickey O'Sullivan and Laura Matthews continue to give wonderful performances each and every night. This show is the perfect fit for this intimate performance venue.

Join us for the final weekend of DYING CITY! See you at the theater!

Our Winter 2017 show!

The Comrades are pleased to announce their Winter 2017 production, PRELUDE TO A KISS by Craig Lucas. This new production of the classic romantic comedy will be directed by Artistic Director Derek Bertelsen and will play the Greenhouse Theater Center (2257 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago) from January 12 through February 4, 2017. Press opening is Saturday, January 14 at 8:00pm.

In this modern day fairy tale, an uninvited guest turns a perfect wedding into a white-knuckled rollercoaster ride of doubt and regret. When an elderly “wedding crasher” kisses the bride, their souls exchange, leaving the brave but bewildered groom to reverse the curse armed only with the power of love. When it first premiered, PRELUDE TO A KISS received a Tony Award nomination for Best Play and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1991.

“Nearly thirty years after its premiere, this play still hits close to home. In a world full of complicated relationships, I am excited to bring a fresh production of this classic romantic comedy to Chicago,” said Artistic Director Derek Bertelsen.

Tickets for PRELUDE TO A KISS will go on sale at a later date. For additional information about The Comrades, please visit www.the-comrades.com.

Looking Ahead!

We’ve been quiet, but we’ve been busy! We were extremely happy with our inaugural production and Chicago premiere of Mallery Avidon’s MARY-KATE OLSEN IS IN LOVE. It was so thrilling for us to work with such a great group of artists on that show and it was very fun to share the show with audiences as well. Since closing, we’ve brought on two new company members from that first production - David Coupe and Cydney Moody - and we’re excited to add their talents and expertise to The Comrades.

Looking ahead, we’ll be producing Christopher Shinn’s dynamic psychological drama DYING CITY at the Heartland Studio in Rogers Park this fall which will be directed by recent Jeff Award winner, Elizabeth Lovelady. We’re assembling another great team of artists and looking forward to auditions later this summer!

A New Theatre Company in 2016.

There's something very exciting about starting a new theatre company in Chicago. This city has a rich history of supporting storefront theatre (Steppenwolf Theatre’s humble beginning in a church basement comes to mind) and we’re all very excited to be on this adventure.

Fun. Vibrant. Engaging. Three words that explain it all. We are going to produce theatre that is thought provoking, yet funny and poignant. We are going to produce theatre that people want to see and want to talk about. And we are going to entertain our audiences and leave them wanting more.

Starting a new company is not without it’s challenges: raising money, picking a show, hiring designers, rehearsing actors: there is more to putting on a show than what the audience sees. That being said, the best thing anyone can do for us right now is to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter or Instagram and come see what we’re all about at the Chicago premiere of Mallery Avidon’s Mary-Kate Olsen Is In Love.

See you at the theatre!
